Drunk Driver Slams Into Crowd At SXSW, Killing Two

The annual music festival held in Austin, Texas took on a somber note in the early hours of the morning as an allegedly drunk driver attempting to elude police mowed down a crowd of people gathered for South By Southwest (SxSW). The driver was going the wrong way on a one way that was also barricaded from cars for the music festival.

Two people died as a result of the fatal motor vehicle crash. An additional 23 more concert-goers were injured. The driver will face capital murder charges, according to the Austin Police Chief, among other criminal charges related to the crash.

The driver hit a couple on a moped, a taxi and a van before abandoning his vehicle and attempting to flee on foot. Officers were able to reach and subdue him, ending the pursuit with his arrest.

The incident started at a gas station off of I-35. Police officers attempted to stop the man at the filling station, but he took off instead.

Two people reportedly suffered serious head injuries in the drunk driving crash.

The show must go on, however. Each year, tens of thousands of people flock to the Austin area for SXSW from all over the world.
