Emergency room visits due to vehicular accidents

As many Georgia drivers may know, traffic accidents are a major cause of injury and death. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that in 2012, 33,000 Americans died in car crashes. The age groups most often involved are young and elderly drivers. The reasons accidents happen are varied.

Any Georgia resident who becomes involved in a car accident may be at risk for suffering a spinal cord injury. New bill would give US regulator more power over vehicle recalls

Under a pending law, in Congress on March 30 regulators from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would have more authority over automobile manufacturers to stop them from selling vehicles with suspected defects and to push forward recalls of these vehicles. The pending legislation, part of a six-year transportation bill, would affect automobile manufacturers throughout the country, including Georgia. The bill would also require used car dealers to search their inventories for any vehicle models affected by recalls and take appropriate action. The law would also increase the penalties for manufacturers not adhering to recall orders from $35 million to $300 million.

Sternum fractures in motor vehicle accidents

Individuals in Georgia who suffer from a fracture to the breastbone, also known as a sternum fracture, may have suffered it in a car wreck; around 60 to 90 percent of these types of fractures are caused in this way. Most often, a sternum fracture occurs in accidents in which the individual is not wearing a seat belt or is not protected by an air bag. It is most common in women and in adults over the age of 50.
