Know what information to gather following a car accident

The moments following a car wreck in Fulton County can be very tense. You might be afraid, injured or concerned about how others are doing. At Butler Wooten & Peak LLP, we understand the emotions you might feel. We also know that taking the right steps after a motor vehicle accident is imperative to ensuring you can recover compensation for your damages.

Because Georgia uses a modified comparative fault model regarding traffic accidents, you only need to prove that the other party was more responsible for the incident than you were to obtain money for your losses. Having the right evidence can help support your claim. Immediately following the accident, if you are uninjured and otherwise able to do so, you should gather the following:

  •        Pictures of the scene
  •        Names and contact information for any witnesses
  •        Contact information for the other driver
  •        The other driver's insurance provider and policy number
  •        Pictures of any damage to your vehicle

You should also make sure that law enforcement officers are there to create an official report. That report could be used as evidence of how the accident occurred.

If you plan on filing a lawsuit, you will need to illustrate your damages. You can do this through keeping medical bills and other documents that show your financial losses. Through working with an attorney at our practice, we can also outline the emotional damages you may have suffered as a result of the incident.
