Motorcycle fatalities show the importance of safety

Riding a motorcycle can be a very freeing experience, which is why so many riders in Fulton County remain committed to the open road. However, staying safe is of paramount importance for all motorcyclists, especially when considering the likelihood of fatalities occurring. This is illustrated by statistics from the National Highway Safety Administration, which paint a very sobering picture for the nation’s motorcycle enthusiasts.

Of all traffic fatalities in 2013, motorcyclists made up 14 percent of those killed, with 4,668 deaths and approximately 88,000 injuries. These statistics are even more alarming when considering that motorcycles only account for about three percent of all registered vehicles on the road, meaning that the fatality rate for riders was six times that of car occupants. In Georgia 107 motorcyclist deaths occurred in 2013 alone.

These statistics also underscore the importance of wearing a helmet. It’s estimated by the NHTSA that helmet usage spared the lives of 1,630 motorcyclists in 2013. Additionally, helmets are thought to prevent fatal injuries from occurring at a rate of 37 percent for motorcycle drivers and 41 percent passengers. While wearing a helmet is crucial when traveling by motorcycle, there are a number of additional tips riders must remember to reduce the likelihood of accidents occurring.

Consumer Reports lists a few vital safety tips, including purchasing the right type of motorcycle for your current skill level. This is particularly important for new riders, who may be tempted to buy a more powerful model than they’re equipped to handle. New riders are also encouraged to attend a motorcycle safety course to further hone their skills. Even those riding at an advanced skill level can make use of safety tips, such as being fully aware of the presence of other vehicles, as many drivers fail to account for the presence of motorcycles when on the road.
